Art and Alphabet – exhibition for all senses at the Hamburger Kunsthalle
For the exhibition ‘Art and Alphabet’ at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, grauwert has developed a concept of mediation which aims to make the contents of the exhibition accessible to the broadest possible range of visitors.
They can stop at specially designed stations which connect their experience of the artworks to the different senses (vision, hearing, taste, smell). For a selected number of pictures and objects, there are corresponding materials and models which can be explored by touch. These invite visitors to access art in an alternative way which is tailored to each specific artwork. To experience the video films presented in the exhibition, there are not only headphones but also induction loops for hearing aids.
A hearing tour which has been produced especially for the exhibition describes the texts of all exhibits. These are also offered as large print and braille guides.
As a further step in the constructive collaboration with Hamburg’s Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverein (Association of Blind and Visually Impaired People, BSVH) and the Norddeutsche Blindenhörbücherei (North-German Audio Library for the Blind), detailed travel information (audio file, text version, way markers) is provided, which makes it easier to get to the venue.
The Kunsthalle put a particular emphasis on creating an accessible experience for blind and visually impaired visitors. The positive feedback from visitors and exhibition organisers shows that even small initiatives can bring significant added value. For more details and images see
