Theaternacht Hamburg – More accessibility in Design for All
Done! The Theatre Night Hamburg is becoming more accessible with subtitled contributions, audio descriptions and sign language offerings!
For three years, Büro grauwert has been helping organisers and venues to optimise the traditional theatre night at the start of the season in a barrier-free way. In 2020, the multifaceted live and on-demand programme became an event for visitors with hearing impairments, visual impairments and signers.
For this purpose, we subtitled more than 30 contributions, produced 6 audio descriptions and a trailer in sign language. In this way, the Theatre Night not only provides insights into new productions, but is also an important step towards more accessible cultural offerings in Hamburg’s theatre landscape.
Since not all content is available on www.theaternacht-hamburg.org, we show in the following trailer what could be realised.
Background: The Theatre Night Hamburg will be implemented as an online streaming format this year and we were able to provide numerous plays and film contributions with subtitles (UT), audio descriptions (AD) and sign language (DGS).

We are curious to see if the public will take the opportunity from Saturday 12 September 16.00 to 19 September to visit www.theaternacht-hamburg.org and see what all there is to experience in Hamburg’s theatres.
Büro grauwert will be in charge of the conception and implementation of the accessible content of the Theatre Night for the next three years. This year as digital streaming – in the coming years hopefully live on site in the theatres and stages of Hamburg.
The accessible offerings of the Digital Theatre Night are funded by Aktion Mensch and implemented by Büro grauwert (www.grauwert.info). In this way, we want to make Hamburg’s cultural life more inclusive in the long term over the next three years.
